چکیده

Our facial expression robots use biomimetic structures, aesthetic design principles, and recent breakthroughs in elastomer material sciences to enact a sizable range of natural humanlike facial expressions. Applications of this class of human-robot interface devices will rise in relevance as humans and robots begin to have more sociable encounters in the coming years. The Identity Emulation project also seeks to imbue these robots with several forms of interactive intelligence, including human-form and facial-expression recognition, and natural language interaction. It is anticipated that a multimodal integration of mechanics, sociable intelligence, and design aesthetics will yield the most effective Human Computer Interface robots.

Emotive Non-Anthropomorphic Robots Perceived as More Calming, Friendly, and Attentive for Victim Management

This paper describes results from a large-scale, complex human study using non-facial and non-verbal affect for victim management in robot-assisted Urban Search and Rescue Applications. Statistically significant results are presented that indicate participants felt emotive robots were more calming, friendlier, and attentive.

Facial Expression Recognition Based on Anatomical Structure of Human Face

Automatic analysis of human facial expressions is one of the challenging problems in machine vision systems. It has many applications in human-computer interactions such as, social signal processing, social robots, deceit detection, interactive video and behavior monitoring. In this paper, we develop a new method for automatic facial expression recognition based on facial muscle anatomy and hum...

Bio-inspired Underwater Robots Powered by Electroactive Polymer Artificial Muscles

Autonomous under robots are highly demanded in environmental monitoring, intelligent collection, and deep water exploration. Aquatic animals (e.g., fishes, whales, rays, etc.) are ultimate examples of superior swimmers as a result of millions of years of evolution, endowed with a variety of morphological and structural features for moving through water with speed, agility, and efficiency. Recen...

A review on robotic fish enabled by ionic polymer–metal composite artificial muscles

A novel actuating material, which is lightweight, soft, and capable of generating large flapping motion under electrical stimuli, is highly desirable to build energy-efficient and maneuverable bio-inspired underwater robots. Ionic polymer-metal composites are important category of electroactive polymers, since they can generate large bending motions under low actuation voltages. IPMCs are ideal...

Toward human interaction with bio-inspired teams

Although much work has been done on designing autonomy and user interfaces for managing small teams of independent robots, much less is known about managing large-scale bio-inspired robot (BIRT) teams. In this paper, we explore human interaction with BIRT teams in an information foraging task. We summarize results from two small experiments that use two types of BIRT teams in a foraging task. T...
